Interpretation of the Artist’s Statement

In Melancolía de la futura muerte, Fernando Martín Vega contemplates farewell through an awareness of legacy: what remains within others when our presence becomes a memory. The work expresses an anticipatory nostalgia for what we have lived, what we have left behind, and a future that will continue to evolve without us. Every encounter holds the possibility of planting a seed a thought, a feeling of affection, or an opening towards paths that once seemed impossible.

The landscape transforms this reflection into a contemplative journey. At its beginning, a dead tree marks a failure at a particular moment along the path. Its presence preserves the memory of what did not flourish without determining the fate of everything that follows. Beneath the dark, fractured ground, energy remains latent; even where the surface appears exhausted, the possibility of transformation endures.

The principal tree welcomes the traveller like an embrace. Its canopy, reminiscent of a brain, connects plant life with the mind and the capacity to sow possibilities within ourselves and others. The tree behind it represents the support that accompanies us, sometimes quietly: something or someone whose presence helps us keep moving forward.

The ascending steps lead towards a luminous structure, simultaneously ancient and futuristic. Within it, the memory of lived experience coexists with an intuition of what has yet to come. At the same time, it invites us to contemplate the death of both past and future so that we may inhabit the present.

The platform and fountain embody the reward of the ascent, while the illuminated portal invites us to enter the self. This inner fortress is built through loss, learning, and courage; it offers a place of stability from which to face uncertainty.

Yet the journey continues beyond the refuge. A narrow bridge reaches towards the eclipse, where the gaze encounters its limit. Crossing it means moving forward without knowing what awaits on the other side: a resolute advance, an act of trust in the process when complete certainty is no longer possible. It is an affirmation of what we have learned along the way.

The three aligned stars bring together the fleeting nature of the moment and the promise of a fulfilled wish. Meanwhile, the clouds that appear to pass behind the eclipse introduce a deliberate visual contradiction. The scene holds a truth that cannot be concealed nothing is permanent even as its full meaning remains beyond our sight.

Melancholy thus emerges between two times: the past we must release and the future from which we will one day be absent. Within that interval, living means transforming and allowing ourselves to be transformed. Farewell becomes an act of honouring a life through what has been shared, the paths that have been opened, and the seeds that will continue to grow within others.

-
